FAQs Answered by Pharmacists: Alphosyl 2-in-1 Shampoo for Psoriasis and Dandruff Relief

What is Alphosyl 2-in-1 shampoo used for?

Alphosyl is a medicated shampoo that relieves scalp conditions like psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis, eczema, and dandruff. It’s especially effective for reducing the itching, scaling, and inflammation caused by these conditions.

How does the coal tar in Alphosyl work?

Coal tar slows down the growth of skin cells and reduces inflammation, which helps calm irritated, flaky skin. It also works as a keratolytic, breaking down thick patches of skin and helping to clear scale and dandruff. While the smell is strong, it’s part of the active therapy.

How long should I use Alphosyl before I see results?

Use the shampoo once or twice a week for up to four weeks. After a few uses, you may start to notice less itchiness and flaking. Always leave the shampoo on the scalp for 3 to 5 minutes (across two applications per wash) to allow the treatment to work properly.

Can I use Alphosyl on coloured or treated hair?

Coal tar shampoos can sometimes cause temporary hair colour changes or affect hair texture, especially with dyed or bleached hair. Use with caution, and consider a patch test to see if your hair has been chemically treated.

Is Alphosyl suitable for children?

Yes, but only with advice from a doctor or pharmacist. It’s important to be cautious when using strong medicated products on children’s sensitive skin.

Are there any risks or side effects?

Some users may experience skin irritation, sensitivity to sunlight, or changes in hair texture or colour. Allergic reactions are rare but serious—stop using the shampoo and seek medical help if you notice swelling, rash, or trouble breathing.

Can I use Alphosyl with other scalp treatments or medications?

As interactions may occur, check with your pharmacist before combining Alphosyl with other scalp products or prescription treatments. Don’t use it on infected or broken skin.

What should I avoid while using Alphosyl?

Avoid sunbeds and extended sun exposure, as coal tar can make your skin more sensitive to UV light. Also, keep the shampoo away from your eyes, rinse thoroughly if contact occurs.

Is Alphosyl safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Always rinse the shampoo off thoroughly before breastfeeding to avoid any contact with the infant’s skin.
