Pharmacist FAQs Answered
What is Cuprofen Maximum Strength used for?
Cuprofen Maximum Strength Tablets are used to relieve a range of painful conditions. They cover muscle ache, toothache, menstrual cramp, backache, headache, migraine, neuralgia, and cold and flu symptoms. It is also employed to reduce fever. The active ingredient, ibuprofen, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that prevents pain, swelling, and inflammation.
What is Cuprofen, and how does it work?
Cuprofen has an ibuprofen content of 400mg. Ibuprofen acts by blocking chemicals in the body known as prostaglandins. Such chemicals are produced during illness or injury and give rise to pain and swelling. By suppressing prostaglandins, ibuprofen alleviates pain, brings down inflammation, and lowers an elevated temperature.
Do I need to take Cuprofen on an empty stomach?
It's always advisable to take Cuprofen with or after food to protect your stomach lining. Taking NSAIDs like ibuprofen on an empty stomach raises the risk of side effects like stomach upset, indigestion, or ulcers.
Is Cuprofen safe for everyone to take?
Cuprofen is not suitable for children under 12 years, or those who:
- Have a past history of stomach ulcers or bleeding in the stomach
- Take other NSAIDs (like aspirin or naproxen)
- Have heart, liver, or kidney problems
- Have asthma brought on by NSAIDs
- Are pregnant at the end of the 3rd month
Always check with a doctor or pharmacist if pregnant, breastfeeding, or have ongoing medical conditions.
What should I do if I miss a dose or take an additional dose?
Cuprofen is taken as required, so you don't have to take it on a strict timetable. If you forget a dose, just take one when you remember, provided it's safe to do so. Do not take more than 3 tablets in 24 hours. If you have taken too much by mistake, ring your doctor or NHS 111 straight away—overdoses can be harmful, particularly to the stomach, kidneys, or heart.
Can I use Cuprofen in the long term for long-term pain?
No. Cuprofen is intended for a short period. Taking large quantities of ibuprofen for the long term raises your risk for developing stomach ulcers, kidney damage, and heart problems. If you continue to experience persistent pain, you should ask your GP about other treatment alternatives.
How do I keep Cuprofen?
Keep Cuprofen in a cool, dry place below 25°C, and out of reach of children. Do not take the tablets after the expiry date. If you have any unused or expired medicine, return it to a pharmacy for destruction.
