Pharmacist FAQs Answered

What is Daktacort Hydrocortisone Cream and how does it work?

Daktacort Hydrocortisone Cream is a two-way action cream applied topically to relieve symptoms of sweat rash (also known as intertrigo) and athlete's foot, especially if the infected part is both infected and inflamed. This cream contains two active ingredients: miconazole nitrate, an antifungal that kills the fungus causing the infection, and hydrocortisone acetate, a mild steroid that reduces redness, itching, and swelling. This combination works both by addressing the infection and soothing the skin, and is especially helpful if inflammation is present. It is worth noting that Daktacort is unsuitable for all fungal infections and must not be used without guidance for conditions like ringworm, except with your medical professional's prescription.

How do I use Daktacort, and how long should I use it?

To use Daktacort effectively, apply a thin amount to the affected skin two times a day, preferably morning and evening. First, wash the area with water, dry it, and then apply a small amount to cover the affected skin lightly. This drug should only be used for a short period, and you should not use it for more than seven consecutive days except where your doctor has directed otherwise. Continuing beyond this duration may lead to side effects or render the fungus resistant to drugs. If your symptoms haven’t improved after one week of using Daktacort, or if they worsen, it’s important to speak to a pharmacist or doctor for further advice.

Who should not use Daktacort cream, and where should it be used?

Daktacort is not suitable for everyone and should not be used on specific body parts. The cream should not be used in children below 10 years except under a particular prescription. It should not be applied on the face, genitals, or back passage as the skin is thinner and softer there, which will cause higher opportunities for irritation or absorption of the steroid. Daktacort should also not be used to treat ringworm if your doctor has not assessed and prescribed your condition. While ringworm is a fungal infection, hydrocortisone might worsen some skin conditions if not diagnosed appropriately. You must always consult your healthcare professional if you are unsure about your symptoms or the proper treatment before you use Daktacort.

What is in Daktacort, and are there any side effects or risks?

Daktacort contains miconazole nitrate 2% w/w and hydrocortisone acetate 1% w/w. Together, they work to stop inflammation and kill fungal infections. The cream also contains other ingredients like macrogol stearates, glycol stearate, oleoyl macrogolglycerides, and liquid paraffin that facilitate the easy spread of the cream and calm dry skin. Preservatives benzoic acid and butylhydroxyanisole are also contained and can induce mild skin irritation in individuals with sensitive skin. Although side effects are minimal when used correctly and for a short duration, burning, itching, or hair thinning will result from improper use or prolonged use. If you experience any irritation upon use, stop and seek advice from a health provider.

How is Daktacort cream stored and disposed of properly?

To maintain Daktacort's safety and efficacy, store it always at or below 25°C and out of direct sunlight or heat. Keep the cap tightly closed after every use to avoid contamination. As with any medication, storing it out of children's sight and reach is essential. If it is past the expiry date or you no longer need it, take it back to your local pharmacy for disposal—the bin and loo are not where it belongs. This protects the environment from harm and ensures other people are not accidentally put in danger through unsafe use.
