Pharmacist FAQs Answered

Can I take Andrews Salts daily for ongoing digestive issues?

Andrews Salts are designed for short-term relief of indigestion, acid build-up, and upset stomach, not for long-term daily use. If you're finding that you need to take it most days or regularly after meals, it’s best to speak to a doctor or pharmacist. Ongoing heartburn or indigestion can be a sign of an underlying condition like acid reflux or gastritis, which may need other treatment. Using Andrews Salts too often can lead to side effects like diarrhoea or affect the balance of salts in your body. The product also contains a high level of sodium, which may be unsuitable for people with high blood pressure or heart conditions. A pharmacist can help guide you on alternative treatments and when to seek further medical advice. Always follow the dosage instructions and avoid using it as a daily routine without medical guidance.

Is it safe to use Andrews Salts while taking other medications?

Andrews Salts can affect how some medicines are absorbed in the body, especially antibiotics like tetracyclines (e.g. doxycycline or minocycline). The ingredients can make your stomach less acidic or change how fast medicines pass through your system. If you’re taking any prescription medicines or regular supplements, check with a pharmacist or doctor before using Andrews Salts. This includes vitamins, calcium or iron tablets, and medications for high blood pressure or kidney problems. It’s usually best to space out taking Andrews Salts and other medicines by at least two hours. If you are on a sodium-restricted diet or have health issues that affect your kidneys or heart, use this product only under medical advice. Always check the label and never exceed the recommended dose unless advised by a healthcare professional.

What should I do if I experience side effects like diarrhoea?

If you get diarrhoea, bloating, or mild stomach cramps after using Andrews Salts, it may mean you’ve taken too much. The product contains magnesium sulphate, which can have a laxative effect, especially when taken in high doses or for constipation. Reducing the dose or switching back to the recommended amount for indigestion usually helps the symptoms subside. Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. If symptoms persist for more than a day or two or become severe, discontinue use of the product and consult your pharmacist. These effects are usually not dangerous, but they can be uncomfortable. For individuals with sensitive stomachs, other antacids or gentle laxatives may be more suitable options. Let a healthcare professional help you find the best option if side effects continue or bother you.

Can Andrews Salts be used as a regular laxative for constipation?

While Andrews Salts can help relieve occasional constipation due to its magnesium content, it should not be used as a daily laxative without consulting your doctor. Overuse of laxatives, including saline ones like this, can lead to your body becoming dependent on them to go to the toilet. It may also disturb your body’s salt and fluid balance. If you are often constipated, try increasing your fibre intake (such as fruits, vegetables, and wholegrains), drinking more water, and staying active. If these lifestyle changes don’t help, speak to your pharmacist about gentler laxatives or treatments more suitable for regular use. Andrews Salts are a good short-term option, but if constipation happens more than occasionally, a long-term plan is needed. Always follow the instructions for use and never exceed the stated dose.

Why do I need to be careful with sodium if I use Andrews Salts?

Each 5ml spoonful of Andrews Salts contains 319mg of sodium, which can quickly add up if you use it several times a day. Too much sodium (salt) in your diet can increase your blood pressure and put extra strain on your heart and kidneys. If you’ve been told to follow a low-sodium diet by your doctor, or if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, or kidney problems, you should avoid using products with added sodium unless advised by a healthcare professional. Even healthy adults should use antacids like this one in moderation. If you’re unsure whether it’s safe for you, your pharmacist can check based on your medical history. There are lower-sodium alternatives available for people who need them, so always ask if you're concerned about salt intake while managing stomach issues.
