Pharmacist FAQs Answered
What is Panadol Extra Advance, and for what purpose?
Panadol Extra Advance relieves mild to moderate pain such as headache, migraine, backache, toothache, period pain, rheumatic pain, and the aches and fever of cold and flu. It contains paracetamol to help relieve pain and lower fever, and caffeine that allows paracetamol to work more effectively.
Is Panadol Extra Advance different from regular Panadol?
Panadol Extra Advance contains 65 mg of caffeine and 500 mg of paracetamol. Caffeine can augment the pain-reducing effect of paracetamol, especially for tension headaches and migraine. It also uses a fast-absorbing dosage form, i.e., it works faster than standard paracetamol. If you are somewhat caffeine-sensitive, you may prefer straight Panadol.
How long does Panadol Extra Advance take to work?
Since it's made with Optizorb™ technology, Panadol Extra Advance is absorbed faster than standard paracetamol and caffeine tablets. The pain relief begins in most people within 15-30 minutes. The maximum effect of pain relief is typically felt approximately 1 hour after taking the tablet.
Is it safe to take Panadol Extra Advance on an empty stomach?
Yes. It is safe to take with or without food. This means it is a convenient option if you need quick relief from pain and have not eaten recently. Just be cautious if you are taking other forms of caffeine, such as coffee or energy drinks, as excessive consumption can cause shakiness, restlessness, or a rapid heart rate.
How much caffeine is in Panadol Extra Advance?
Each tablet contains 65 mg of caffeine, so a standard dose of two tablets provides 130 mg. That is more or less the dose you would have from a big cup of tea or a small cup of coffee. Don't have too many caffeinated drinks if you are taking this medication to prevent side effects like insomnia, restlessness, or a sense of chest unease.
Is Panadol Extra Advance compatible with other medications?
Do not take it with any other paracetamol-containing tablets, capsules or liquid medicines, as that will increase damage to the liver. Always read labels, especially cold and flu remedies and some sleeping tablets which also contain paracetamol. If unsure, consult your pharmacist.
If you take other medicines regularly, or you have liver, kidney, or heart disease, talk to your doctor before taking Panadol Extra Advance.
Can I take Panadol Extra Advance if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. Panadol Extra Advance must not be taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to the caffeine, which can hurt your baby. Discuss with your GP or pharmacist safer alternatives, such as plain paracetamol without caffeine.
What should I do if I overdose on tablets?
It is not safe to overdose on paracetamol and can lead to severe liver damage even if you don't feel unwell at first. Call NHS 111 straight away or go to A&E. Don't wait for symptoms to occur. Take the pack with you and give it to the healthcare team to inform them of what you have taken.
