Pharmacist FAQs Answered

Can Replens MD be used with HRT or vaginal oestrogen creams?

Yes, Replens MD can be used with hormone replacement therapy (HRT), e.g. vaginal oestrogen creams or pessaries, if prescribed by your doctor. Replens is a non-hormonal cream, therefore it does not impact hormone levels within the body. Some women say that taking both treatments together gives them more relief from symptoms of vaginal atrophy. If you are already using a product elsewhere in the vagina, speak to a pharmacist or GP before trying to use the two products together in case there is a risk of the two products affecting each other. It's best to space out applying each product.

Can I use Replens MD when I'm having difficulty conceiving?

Yes, you may use Replens MD while trying to conceive, but it's important to note that it is not a fertility product. Even though it's hormone-free and has not been shown to harm sperm, it may have some effect on the vaginal environment during ovulation. If you are trying to get pregnant and are on fertility treatment or keeping a very close eye on your cycle, get permission from your doctor before you start any vaginal moisturiser. For others, having Replens a day or two before intercourse (not only immediately before) may be more suitable during fertile periods.

Does Replens MD alleviate painful sex (dyspareunia)?

Yes, Replens MD is sometimes used to help alleviate pain during sex, a symptom most often caused by vaginal dryness or thinning of the tissues of the vagina. By replenishing natural moisture and softening and moistening the vaginal lining, it relieves soreness and discomfort. It is not a personal lubricant, but its extended release provides a way to promote comfort while being intimate over time. For further lubrication with sex, you may still prefer to have a water-based lubricant. Replens can be incorporated into a routine for daily maintenance to promote vaginal health and ease of intercourse.

Is it normal to have discharge after applying Replens MD?

Yes, many women notice a white or clear discharge after using Replens MD for the first few times. This is normal and will probably happen as the product helps the vagina clear away dry, dead skin cells that have built up. With repeated use over time, discharge should taper off or even stop. It doesn't mean that the product is not doing its job—in fact, it means that it's rejuvenating vaginal tissue. If discharge lasts longer than a few days, space out applications. If you are worried or get a strange odour or stinging, speak with a pharmacist or your doctor.

How do I clean the Replens MD applicator safely?

The applicator is reusable, so make sure you clean it after each use. After applying the moisturiser, gently unscrew the applicator and wash it with warm (not hot) and mild, fragrance-free soap. Make sure to rinse well so there is no residue. Let it dry completely before placing it in a clean, dry space. Don't use hot water, harsh cleaners, or put it in a dishwasher as it could harm the applicator. Keeping the applicator clean helps prevent infection and ensures it is safe to use every time.

Can Replens MD be used following menopause or cancer treatment?

Yes, Replens MD is often prescribed for post-menopausal dryness and for women recovering from cancer treatment. Oestrogen levels are reduced by a variety of treatments, such as chemotherapy or hormone-blocking medication, causing dryness and irritation. Since Replens is non-hormonal and oestrogen-free, it's a safe alternative for women who cannot tolerate hormone therapies. Always consult with your cancer care team before using any new products. Replens sustains healthy, well-hydrated vaginal tissues, promoting quality of life and supporting daily comfort and intimacy.

Is Replens MD right for perimenopause?

Yes, Replens MD is safe and effective for women going through perimenopause, the premenopausal phase when hormone levels first start to change. Dryness in the vagina can begin at this time even though periods are still regular. Replens provides relief from symptoms like itching, soreness, and painful intercourse, without using hormones. Using it two to three times a week helps maintain natural moisture and comfort. It’s suitable even if you’re still having your periods. If symptoms change or become more severe, speak to your pharmacist or GP for further support.
