FAQs Answered by our Pharmacists – Selsun Anti-Dandruff Medicated Shampoo 2.5%

How does selenium sulphide treat dandruff and scalp conditions?

Selenium sulphide is an antifungal and antiseborrheic agent. It works by slowing down the turnover of skin cells on your scalp and helping to reduce the natural oils (sebum) that feed dandruff-causing yeast. This helps to calm irritation, reduce flaking, and control the greasy buildup that contributes to seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Is Selsun Shampoo safe for colored, bleached, or permed hair?

Selsun Shampoo may discolour treated or light-colored hair, especially if not rinsed out properly. To reduce this risk, be sure to rinse thoroughly and avoid leaving the shampoo on the scalp longer than the instructions recommend. If you’ve recently colored or chemically treated your hair, talk to a pharmacist before using Selsun.

Can I use a regular conditioner or another shampoo with Selsun?

Yes, you can use a gentle conditioner after rinsing out Selsun to help with dryness. However, avoid using other medicated shampoos at the same time unless advised by a pharmacist or doctor. Using a non-medicated, mild shampoo on days you're not using Selsun can also help maintain scalp health without interfering with treatment.

How long does it take to see results with Selsun Shampoo?

Most people start noticing an improvement in scalp itchiness, greasiness, and flaking within 1–2 weeks of regular use. To get the best results, follow the full course as directed. If symptoms continue or get worse after 4 weeks, speak to a healthcare provider for further advice.

Can Selsun Shampoo be used to treat scalp ringworm (tinea capitis)?

Selsun Shampoo is sometimes used off-label (not listed on the product label) to help treat fungal scalp infections like tinea capitis, but only under medical supervision. It’s not a substitute for antifungal tablets, which are usually needed for full treatment. If you think you or your child has scalp ringworm, speak to your doctor first.

What should I do if Selsun causes scalp irritation?

If you feel a burning sensation, redness, or itching after using Selsun, rinse it out immediately and avoid further use until you've consulted a pharmacist or doctor. Mild irritation can happen, but should not be severe or long-lasting. Using it too often or leaving it on too long can increase the risk of side effects.

Is there a difference between Selsun 2.5% and regular anti-dandruff shampoos?

Yes. Selsun 2.5% is a strong medicated shampoo that contains a high concentration of selenium sulphide, making it more effective for moderate to severe dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis. Over-the-counter anti-dandruff shampoos with ingredients like zinc pyrithione or ketoconazole are milder and more suitable for light flaking or daily use.
