5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a naturally occurring amino acid produced by the body and is converted into serotonin, a chemical that helps elevate mood. 5-HTP may also elevate melatonin, which is important for sleep. 5-HTP is involved in the regulation of mood, appetite, and gut function.
