Pharmacist FAQs Answered

What is Bronchostop actually supposed to do?

Bronchostop is a herbal cough syrup that is designed to treat both dry and chesty coughs. It contains two herbal extracts - thyme herb and marshmallow root - with varying pharmacological actions. Thyme possesses bronchodilatory and antimicrobial actions. It relaxes the airways and can inhibit bacterial growth. Marshmallow root contains mucilage—a gel-like substance that coats the lining of the throat. This creates a protective barrier, which can calm the cough reflex due to irritation.

So whether your cough is tickly and dry or productive and wet, this two-stage formula provides mechanical relief (through coating) and functional support (by relaxing bronchial tension and facilitating mucus clearance).

How do I use Bronchostop?

Adults and children 12 years and above:

Use the measuring cup supplied.

Take 15 ml every 4 hours.

You can take it up to 6 times a day (i.e., a total of 90 ml in 24 hours).

Try to take doses at equally spaced time intervals throughout the day.

Don't take more often than recommended—taking it won't speed recovery and will most likely give you an upset stomach. And don't use it in children under 12 years, as their response to herbal extracts is unpredictable and dosage safety isn't yet established with younger groups.

Can I add this to my current medication?

In general, Bronchostop is well tolerated and doesn’t commonly interfere with prescribed medicines. But it's still wise to check with a pharmacist, particularly if you’re taking medications that:

  • Affect liver metabolism (e.g., some anticonvulsants or antifungals)
  • Interact with herbs (e.g., warfarin or lithium)
  • Involve the immune system or respiratory tract

There is also a remote theoretical danger of enhanced sedative effect when used with medications that already suppress the central nervous system—despite the fact that Bronchostop itself is not sleepy.

Can I use it during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

It's not officially contraindicated, but caution is taken. In animal studies, large amounts of thyme have been linked with uterine stimulation, which would be an issue when pregnant. There's minimal clinical data on marshmallow root use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If pregnant or breastfeeding, speak with your GP or midwife before using it. Herbal does not mean risk-free.

Are there any allergens or ingredients I should be aware of?

Yes. Bronchostop contains methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218) and propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216). These two preservatives have also been found to produce allergic reactions on the skin in some people. Symptoms may be rash, itching, or swelling—most often of the lips or face. It's also worth being cautious if you're allergic to plants of the Lamiaceae family (thyme, mint, basil), or Malvaceae (marshmallow).

There is no sugar or alcohol in the syrup so it is ideal for diabetics or people who are excluding alcohol-based medications.

What if I miss a dose or take too much?

If you miss a dose, take it when you remember - then resume your routine. Don't double the dose.

If you accidentally ingest a higher dose than recommended, you may experience milder side effects like nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain. Excessive thyme intake is highly uncommon, along with dizziness or headaches. If this happens, skip the next dose and drink lots of water. Tell your physician if you have unpleasant or prolonged symptoms.

For how long do I have to keep taking it?

You can take it up to a week without checking in with a pharmacist. If your cough hasn’t improved - or it’s getting worse - something else might be happening. A lingering cough could signal post-viral irritation, asthma, or a secondary bacterial infection. Seek advice if:

  • You have chest pain, wheezing, or shortness of breath
  • You’re coughing up blood or green mucus
  • You have a fever that doesn’t settle after 48 hours

How do I store it?

  • Keep below 25°C
  • Light protection – keep in original container
  • Use within 4 weeks of opening
  • Keep cap firmly closed
  • Out of children's sight and reach

If the liquid is cloudy or has changed colour, do not use it - even if it is within date.
