Pharmacist FAQs Answered
How does Bronchostop work?
Bronchostop Junior is a cough syrup designed for children aged 1 year and above. It’s suitable for any type of cough related to a cold — whether it’s dry, tickly, or chesty. This is particularly helpful when the exact cause of the cough isn’t clear, which is common in younger children. The product contains two key ingredients: honey and marshmallow root dry extract. Honey acts as a natural demulcent, coating and soothing the throat. Marshmallow extract contributes a similar effect, reducing local irritation and calming the urge to cough. Together, they create a physical barrier over the throat lining, which can help break the cycle of coughing and irritation — especially useful during the night when symptoms often worsen.
How Much Broncostop should I use?
Doses vary based on age and should always be measured using the provided cup. Children aged 6 to 11 years can have 15 ml up to four times a day. Those aged 4 to 5 years should take 7.5 ml, also up to four times daily. For children aged 2 to 3 years, the recommended dose is 5 ml, again up to four times daily. For those aged 1 year and over, it’s 5 ml up to three times daily. These doses should be spaced throughout the day, ideally after meals and before bedtime. Night-time use is safe and may help reduce coughing that disturbs sleep. The syrup has a pleasant strawberry flavour, which makes it more acceptable to younger children, especially those sensitive to taste or texture.
Is It Safe to Use with Other Medicines?
Bronchostop Junior is not known to interact with common children’s medications, so it can usually be given alongside other cold treatments — such as paracetamol, ibuprofen, or saline nasal sprays. That said, if your child is on long-term treatment for conditions like asthma, epilepsy, or gastrointestinal disorders, it’s worth checking with your local pharmacist before starting Bronchostop. It’s also essential to avoid giving another product that contains parabens, as this syrup includes both methyl- and propyl-4-hydroxybenzoate, which can increase the risk of allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
When Not to Use Bronchostop
Do not give Bronchostop Junior to any child under 12 months. This is due to the inclusion of honey, which can carry a small but serious risk of infant botulism - a rare but dangerous form of food poisoning. The syrup should also be avoided if your child has had previous reactions to honey, marshmallow root, or any of the listed ingredients. If your child has an inherited intolerance to fructose, speak to a healthcare professional before using it, as honey and xylitol can trigger symptoms in those with certain metabolic disorders.
Coughs in Asthmatic Children
For children with asthma, any cough should be approached with caution. Bronchostop Junior may help relieve mild throat irritation but should not replace prescribed preventers or relievers. If a cough is persistent or linked to wheezing or breathlessness, it may be part of an asthma flare. In that case, treatment should be guided by your child’s asthma action plan. Using herbal products without adjusting asthma medication could delay necessary treatment.
When to Seek Further Help
Stop the syrup and get medical advice if your child’s cough hasn’t improved after five days. Coughs that linger could point to a bacterial infection, post-viral inflammation, or something unrelated to a cold - like allergies, asthma, or reflux. Also, speak to a doctor if your child develops a fever, becomes drowsy, breathes faster than usual, or refuses to eat or drink. These may be signs that the illness is more serious and needs medical treatment beyond over-the-counter products.
How to Store Bronchostop?
The syrup should be stored below 25°C, away from direct sunlight, and kept in its original packaging. Always secure the cap tightly after each use. Once opened, the bottle should be used within four weeks. Do not use after the expiry date. If the syrup changes in colour, texture, or smell, it should be discarded, even if within the four-week window. Keep the bottle out of reach and sight of children, and avoid transferring the liquid into another container, as this increases the risk of contamination.
