Self care advice: Please see below for more information on how to treat a boil and advice on how to prevent them.

    • Most boils get better without the need for medical treatment.
    • One of the best ways to speed up healing is to apply a warm, moist face cloth to the boil for 10-20 minutes, three or four times a day.
    • The heat increases the amount of blood circulating around the boil, which sends more infection-fighting white blood cells to the area. When the boil bursts, cover it with sterile gauze or a dressing to prevent the spread of infection. Afterwards, wash your hands thoroughly using hot water and soap.
    • Never squeeze or pierce a boil because it could spread the infection.
    • You can use over-the-counter painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, to help relieve any pain caused by the boil.

FAQs Answered by a Pharmacist – Magnesium Sulphate Paste B.P.

What is Magnesium Sulphate Paste used for?

This paste is a drawing ointment used to treat boils, carbuncles, and other minor skin infections. It works by drawing out pus and reducing inflammation, thereby helping the infection heal more quickly. It may also relieve discomfort by reducing pressure under the skin.

How do I apply Magnesium Sulphate Paste?

Start by cleaning the affected skin. Stir the paste, then apply a generous layer directly to the boil or infected area. Cover with a clean dressing. You can repeat the application as needed, usually once or twice a day, until the area improves. Always wash your hands before and after application.

How long does it take for a boil to heal with this paste?

Boils usually improve within a few days to a week, especially if treated early. The paste can help bring the infection to a head so it drains naturally. If the boil doesn’t improve after a week or becomes worse, consult your GP.

Can I use it on broken skin or open wounds?

No, avoid using it on open or broken skin unless advised by a healthcare professional. It's designed for superficial skin infections and should not be used on deep wounds or large broken areas of skin.

    Is this safe for children?

Yes, Magnesium Sulphate Paste is suitable for children, adults, and the elderly. The same directions apply for all age groups, but care should be taken to cover the treated area securely to prevent accidental ingestion or contact with the eyes.

Can I use this on my face?

It can be used on the face with caution, avoiding the eyes, mouth, and sensitive areas. For facial use, especially near the eyes, speak with a pharmacist or GP first.

Is it okay to use it with other creams or medications?

Generally, yes—but avoid applying other topical products directly over or under the paste. If you're using prescription creams or ointments, check with your pharmacist before combining treatments.
