Pharmacist FAQ Answered
What is Covonia Chesty Cough Syrup used for?
Covonia Chesty Cough Sugar-Free Syrup contains the active ingredient guaifenesin, which is an expectorant. It thins mucus in your chest, making it easier to cough up. This brings phlegm out of the airways and makes you feel it is easier to breathe. It's especially handy when you've got a productive or chesty cough brought on by colds, infections, or respiratory tract inflammation. Because it's sugar-free, it's okay for people who need to be mindful of sugar intake, like people with diabetes (though they should also talk to a doctor).
Who can use this cough syrup?
This syrup is for adults, the elderly, and children over 12 years old. It's not for children under 12. The dose is 15ml, and if needed, it can be repeated up to three times in a 24-hour period and at least six hours apart. Do not overdose above the stated maximum, and do not take it with any other cough or cold medicine, as an accidental overdose of similar ingredients can happen.
Can I take it if I am pregnant or have other health conditions?
If you are pregnant, lactating, or desire to become pregnant, it is best that you talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you use this drug. In addition, you must avoid taking this syrup if you have an uncommon blood disorder called porphyria or if you have a known allergy to guaifenesin or to any of the listed ingredients. Because the syrup has sweeteners such as sorbitol, caution should be exercised by those with sugar intolerance or those who have been instructed to be on a low-sorbitol diet.
Is there a risk of side effects or something to look out for?
Most individuals tolerate guaifenesin well, but others may develop mild side effects like nausea or stomach discomfort. If you have any signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, itching, or shortness of breath, stop using the product and call your doctor immediately. If your cough lasts longer than a few days, worsens, or is accompanied by fever, rash, or frequent headache, you should see your GP or pharmacist because this could be a sign of something more serious.
Does it interact with other medicines?
Covonia Chesty Cough Sugar-Free Syrup won't affect most other medicines. But if you're taking asthma, COPD, or other breathing medications or taking more than one drug, it makes sense to speak with your pharmacist or doctor first. Never take this syrup alongside other cough remedies except where instructed because some contain similar ingredients that trigger overdosing or side effects.
