Pharmacist FAQs Answered
How does Curanail treat nail infections?
Curanail contains the active substance amorolfine, a potent antifungal drug specifically designed to penetrate deep into the nail where the fungus lives. The medical name for nail fungus is onychomycosis, and it is a difficult condition to cure because its location beneath the hard surface of the nail makes treatments impossible to penetrate. Amorolfine destroys the fungal cell walls, preventing the fungus from spreading and growing.
Curanail builds up in the nail over time, so applying it once a week, every week, is required. Even if your nail appears better, the fungus may still be present deeper within. That's why treatment is continued until a new, healthy nail has completely replaced the old nail — around 6 months for fingernails and 9 to 12 months for toenails. Missing doses or stopping too soon can cause the infection to recur.
Who can take Curanail, and when should you speak to a doctor instead?
Curanail is for people with mild fungal nail infections, in which no more than two nails are affected and no nail root involvement is present. It's terrific if the infected nails are still relatively intact and not crumbling or too severely thickened. If you have more than two nails that are infected, or if the nail is very damaged or discoloured, then a pharmacist or doctor needs to be visited. You might need a prescription-only medication or oral tablet that works throughout the body.
Curanail is not suitable for use in children, and should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless a doctor has specifically advised it. If you’re unsure whether your nail infection is suitable for Curanail, it’s best to show your nail to a pharmacist or GP.
You also shouldn’t use Curanail if:
- You have a known allergy to amorolfine or other ingredients in the product.
- Your infection affects more than two nails.
- You have a compromised immune system, for example, due to HIV, diabetes that is not under control, or following cancer therapy.
How do I use Curanail properly, and what should not be done when using Curanail?
For maximum benefit from Curanail, use these four simple steps each week:
- Dispose of the infected nail gently with one of the provided disposable nail files. This makes treatment penetrate deeper into the nail.
- Clean the nail with a cleaning swab to remove grease, dust, and old varnish.
- With the applicator brush, apply a thin layer of lacquer to the nail, covering the entire surface.
- Leave for 3 minutes or more before handling anything.
You can use cosmetic nail polish, but only after waiting for 10 minutes for the lacquer to dry thoroughly. Remove any remaining nail varnish before using it again a week later.
Things to avoid:
- Don't reuse nail files on healthy nails and infected nails.
- Don't skip weekly application, even when the nail improves.
- Don't use lacquer on broken or inflamed skin around the nail.
- Do not use gel polish or artificial nails while undergoing treatment.
How long does it take for Curanail to work, and when do I discontinue its use?
Fungal nail infections take a long time to clear, not because the medicine is slow, but because nails grow slowly. Even once the fungus is killed, you’ll need to wait for the damaged part of the nail to grow out.
For fingernails, treatment usually lasts about 6 months.
It can take 9 to 12 months for toenails to regrow a healthy nail fully.
You should keep using Curanail once a week until the infected nail returns to normal. This means no discolouration, thickening, or brittleness is observable. If no change at all can be observed after using it regularly for three months, consult your pharmacist or doctor.
Don't stop early even if improvement is observed. The fungus is likely still active under the surface and can regrow.
How do I store Curanail and safely use the kit?
Curanail includes everything you require for safe treatment and hygiene:
- 3ml lacquer bottle
- 30 single-use nail files
- 30 cleaning swabs
- Applicator brush attached to the cap
How to safely store Curanail:
- Firmly screw on the lid when not being used.
- Store at room temperature below 30°C.
- Avoid heat and flame – the lacquer contains alcohol, which is flammable.
- Store the product out of the reach of children at all times.
Discard used swabs and files after each use to prevent cross-infection. Do not share your brush or nail files with anyone.
