Pharmacist FAQs Answered

In what ways is the spray powder different from the cream?

Daktarin Aktiv Spray Powder is a dry, talc-based preparation that helps absorb sweat and dampness and hence is particularly useful in keeping feet dry and not susceptible to more fungal infection. It's also particularly useful between the toes or in shoes and socks. The cream form is better for soothing red, cracked, or tender skin, as it is more moisturising. Some people apply the cream to cure the infection and later switch to the spray powder in order to help keep the area dry and avoid the recurrence of the fungus.

Can I apply the spray powder daily to prevent athlete's foot?

Yes, you can use Daktarin Aktiv Spray Powder as a preventive treatment, particularly if you tend to get athlete's foot or are frequently in closed shoes like trainers, boots, or close-toed shoes for extended periods of time. Spraying your feet and in between your shoes frequently can prevent the growth of the fungus. It works best under hot, moist conditions, such as in sporting settings, gyms, or around swimming pools.

What should I do if I accidentally inhale the spray?

If you accidentally inhale a small quantity of the spray, it may irritate your nose, throat, or chest but will usually clear up quickly. But if you or a child inhale a large amount, such as if sprayed in a small space or in the face, and have coughing, shortness of breath, or chest tightness, seek medical help right away. Always spray in an open space and not in the face.

Can this spray be applied to sweating or broken skin?

You can spray sweaty skin because the powder soaks up the moisture and dries out the area. But you should not apply it to broken, cracked, or bleeding skin because it stings and worsens the irritation. If the skin is severely damaged, it is safer to use a cream or go to a pharmacist or doctor for advice on how to treat the infection safely.

May I use Daktarin spray in conjunction with other antifungals?

If you’re using another antifungal product, such as a cream, gel, or tablet, it’s best to check with a pharmacist first. Using too many antifungal products simultaneously might irritate your skin or reduce the effectiveness of the treatment. However, it’s sometimes OK to use the spray in your shoes or on your feet during the day and apply a cream at night - just make sure to space them out and not overuse them.

Should I stop using the spray if my skin improves?

No, it is necessary to keep spraying until the skin appears totally normal and then keep going for several days to a week thereafter. This ensures that all the fungus is eliminated and there is less risk of its return. Quitting too soon is one of the main reasons that fungal infections repeat themselves.
