Product Summary

Imodium Dual Action Tablets is a medicine used to treat sudden, short-lived (acute) attacks of diarrhoea and calm additional abdominal discomfort such as cramps, wind and bloating.

The tablets contain loperamide hydrochloride, which helps reduce diarrhoea by slowing down an overactive bowel, helping the body to absorb water and salts from the bowel.

The tablets also contain simeticone, which is an anti-foaming agent that breaks up trapped wind in the bowel that causes cramps and bloating.

This medicine is for use in adults and children aged 12 years and over.

Directions

  • Adults over 18 years old: Swallow two tablets initially, followed by one tablet after each loose bowel movement.
  • Children and young adults (12 to 18 years): Swallow one tablet initially, followed by one tablet after each loose bowel movement.
  • Do not take more than 4 tablets in any 24 hour period.
  • Do not take for more than 48 hours.
  • If symptoms persist for more than 48 hours talk to your doctor

Ingredients

  • The active ingredients are: Loperamide hydrochloride (2 mg per caplet) and Simeticone (measured as 125 mg dimeticone per caplet).
  • The other ingredients are: Calcium hydrogen phosphate anhydrous, microcrystalline cellulose, acesulfame potassium, artificial vanilla flavour (includes propylene glycol, maltodextrin and benzyl alcohol), sodium starch glycolate (type A) and stearic acid.

Warnings and Restrictions

If you have AIDS and your stomach becomes swollen, stop taking the tablets immediately and contact your doctor.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist:

  • if you suffer from liver disease
  • if your diarrhoea lasts for more than 48 hours
  • if you have severe diarrhoea, as your body loses more fluid, sugars and salts than normal
  • if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant.

This medicine may make you feel dizzy, tired or sleepy. If affected do not drive or operate machinery.

Imodium Plus Comfort Tablets only treat the symptoms of diarrhoea. In some cases, the cause of your diarrhoea may require treatment.

If symptoms persist or worsen, please contact your doctor.

When you have diarrhoea, your body can lose large amounts of fluids and salts.

You will need to replace the fluid by drinking more liquid than usual.

Ask your pharmacist about powders (oral rehydration therapy) which replace fluids and salts lost during diarrhoea.

Taking other medicines

Talk to a doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including:

  • quinidine (used to treat abnormal heart rhythms or malaria)
  • itraconazole or ketoconazole (antifungal medicines)
  • gemfibrozil (used to treat high cholesterol)
  • ritonavir (used to treat HIV infection and AIDS)
  • desmopressin (used to control thirst and urine production in patients with diabetes insipidus)

If you are unsure about any of the medicines you are taking, show the bottle or pack to your pharmacist.

Storage

Store in the original package.

Do not use your medicine after the date shown as the expiry date on the packaging.

Keep the product out of the sight and reach of children.

Pharmacist FAQs Answered

Can I take Imodium Dual Action Tablets for food poisoning?

Imodium Dual Action Tablets can relieve symptoms like diarrhoea and stomach cramps caused by food poisoning or minor stomach bugs, but they won't cure the infection. The tablets reduce the speed of bowel movements and lessen gas, so you'll feel more comfortable. But if you have a high fever, blood in your stools, or very severe symptoms, you must talk to a doctor about it. Bacterial or viral infections may require different treatment. Do not take Imodium Dual Action Tablets if your body is trying to eliminate harmful germs, as it will make things worse.

Can I take Imodium Dual Action Tablets before I travel?

Imodium is not to be taken as a preventative measure before symptoms appear. It is only to be taken after diarrhoea has begun. Even so, if you are going to develop traveller's diarrhoea, it is wise to carry some Imodium Dual Action Tablets in your travel kit. Drink plenty of clean water and avoid unsafe foods while travelling. If you're unsure about how to manage diarrhoea while abroad, ask your pharmacist for travel health advice and other valuable items, such as oral rehydration salts, before you travel, to avoid dehydration.

Is it safe to take Imodium with other medications?

Yes, it's generally okay to take Imodium Dual Action Tablets with standard painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen because they work in different ways. Imodium works on diarrhoea and bloating, and painkillers ease discomfort or fever. If you're taking other medications, especially for ongoing illnesses like heart disease, epilepsy, or infections, you should speak to your pharmacist or doctor to make sure no interactions happen.

What if I have taken more than the recommended dose by accident?

It is harmful to take too many Imodium Dual Action Tablets. Symptoms of overdose are likely to include extreme tiredness, difficulty breathing, or your heart beating more slowly than usual. If you think you or someone else has taken too much, contact a doctor or go to a hospital straight away, even if you feel well at first. Call 999, go to A&E, or call your local emergency services. Always read the dosage instructions carefully and keep the medicine out of the reach of children.

Can I still take Imodium if I have a sensitive stomach or IBS?

People who suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or a sensitive gut can take Imodium Dual Action Tablets for the occasional episode of diarrhoea, especially if symptoms are also accompanied by bloating and cramps. But you shouldn't use this medicine every day or for diarrhoea that lasts for a long time unless a doctor has recommended it. Other people with IBS may be helped with different types of treatment depending on their symptoms. If you're unsure what's best for you, speak to your pharmacist or GP for personal advice.

What are some non-medicated ways to treat diarrhoea?

Imodium helps cure the symptoms of diarrhoea, but there are a few things you can also do to recover faster. To prevent dehydration, drink plenty of fluids, such as water, diluted squash, or oral rehydration solutions. Have small, bland meals such as plain rice, bananas, toast, or boiled potatoes. Avoid dairy products, caffeine, spicy foods, and fizzy drinks until your stomach settles. Rest is also essential—let your body recover. If you're unsure what foods or drinks are most suitable for you, your pharmacist can advise you based on your age and health needs.
