Pharmacist FAQs Answered

What is Iglu Rapid Relief Gel used for?

Iglu Rapid Relief Gel is a three-way treatment for mouth ulcers. It works by forming a protective barrier over the ulcer, which stops irritation and promotes rapid healing. The gel contains lidocaine, a local anaesthetic that quickly numbs pain, and aminoacridine, an antiseptic that prevents infection. This makes it ideal for painful ulcers caused by irritation, trauma, or conditions like canker sores. The viscous gel sticks firmly to the back of the mouth, so it's not easily washed out by saliva. It is suitable for adults, older adults, and children aged 7 and above. Always read the leaflet first.

How do I use Iglu Gel?

Use a clean finger or applicator to apply a small amount directly to the ulcer, using only one wiping motion—do not rub.

Apply sparingly and do not swallow early, allowing the gel to create a protective cover.

Reapply as needed to maintain coverage over the area, especially after consuming food or drink.

Use only inside your mouth and avoid getting it near your eyes.

For use by children (7 years and older), use with close adult supervision to ensure safe use. Always replace the cap securely after use to keep the gel clean and effective. If your ulcer has not improved after a few days, consult your doctor.

Is it safe for pregnancy and children?

Iglu Rapid Relief Gel is safe for use in children aged 7 and older when used as instructed. For children under age, always speak to your GP or pharmacist first. No risk exists during pregnancy or breastfeeding, but as there is little data, use with caution and consult your health professional before treatment is started. Do not use large amounts or apply frequently during pregnancy unless instructed to do so. If breastfeeding, attempt to use the gel near the time of feeding, to limit the possibility of the baby exposing themselves to it.

What are the side effects or risks?

Side effects of Iglu Gel are rare when used correctly. Allergic reactions (redness, swelling, or burning) can be experienced; however, if you are allergic to lidocaine, aminoacridine, or any other ingredient. Overuse may lead to unwanted effects, such as drowsiness, nervousness, low blood pressure, or breathing difficulties—these are rare and usually occur only when too much is applied. If this happens, get urgent medical help. Keep the gel away from your eyes, and rinse immediately if it gets in by accident. If the ulcer lasts more than a week or two, speak to a doctor or dentist to rule out underlying issues.

How should I store and maintain the product?

Store the tube in a cool, dry place at less than 25°C, out of the sunlight and away from children. Close the cap tightly after use to prevent the gel from drying out or becoming contaminated. Use the product no longer after the expiry date shown on the packaging has passed. For safety and hygiene, do not share your tube of gel with others. Do not use it if the gel has altered in texture, smell, or colour—return it to the pharmacy for guidance on disposal.
