Pharmacist FAQs Answered
What is DEET, and why does Jungle Formula Maximum use 50%?
DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) is a potent ingredient that repels insects by impairing their sense of smell and their ability to locate humans. Jungle Formula Maximum contains 50% DEET—the highest concentration allowed for use by the general public in the UK. The strength provides extended protection, especially in high-risk environments where insects like mosquitoes may cause diseases such as malaria or dengue fever. Adults should use it and not on a daily, routine basis in low-risk environments.
Is Jungle Formula Maximum suitable for children or teenagers?
No, it is just for adults and kids 18 and older. Not suitable for younger teens or children due to the intense concentration of DEET, which can irritate sensitive skin or be hazardous when misused. For families going on a trip together, child-safe bug spray or a low-strength DEET is recommended for anyone younger than 18. Always seek advice from a pharmacist before using strong repellents on teens.
How often do I need to reapply Jungle Formula Maximum Insect Repellent?
Generally, a single application will repel most mosquitoes for up to 9 hours. Heat, sweat, bathing, or skin friction can degrade its effectiveness, however. You may need to reapply in these situations, but only once a day as directed. If it's unclear whether you need to reapply, watch for signs like fresh bites or increased bug activity around you. Be sure to wash it off when you no longer need protection, such as before bed in an air-conditioned, screened room.
Can I use this bug repellent on my face or clothing?
You can use Jungle Formula on clothing made of natural fibres, but avoid spraying on synthetic or delicate materials, as DEET can damage plastics and some fabrics. For the face, never spray directly. Instead, spray a small amount into your palm, then carefully apply it to your cheeks, forehead, and neck, avoiding your eyes, lips, and broken skin. Be sure to wash your hands immediately after application to avoid accidentally transferring it to sensitive areas.
What should I do if I'm allergic to this repellent?
Redness or burning may result if you have sensitive skin, especially when applying too much or to already irritated skin. If your skin begins to itch, swell, or break out in a rash, gently wash the affected area with soap and cool water, and then stop using the product. See medical care immediately for more serious symptoms, such as breathing problems, dizziness, or allergic reactions. Always read the label and apply a small test patch to your skin before using it full-time if you are a first-time user of DEET.
How do I safely store and dispose of Jungle Formula Maximum?
This highly flammable product should be kept away from heat, flames, and direct sunlight. Always store it in a dry, cool place, tightly closed in its original packaging, and out of the reach of children. Never spray it near food or drink. Never reuse or burn the bottle once it is empty. Dispose of it according to local waste disposal procedures, and never pour any remaining liquid down the drain or into waterways, as it can harm aquatic life.
