Pharmacist FAQs Answered

How do Murine Eye Drops calm redness and irritation?

Murine Irritation and Redness Relief Eye Drops contain naphazoline hydrochloride, a drug that narrows the tiny blood vessels at the front of your eye. If your eyes are irritated by wind, dust, smoke, or computer use for extended periods, these blood vessels dilate and make your eyes look red and tired. The drops reduce redness and soothe the burning or itching feeling by tightening the blood vessels. Relief is often quick — a matter of minutes. However, these drops only address the symptoms and not the underlying cause of the irritation. That is why it isn't advisable to take them for more than a few days without the advice of a physician. If your eyes remain red or irritated, an issue may require medical consultation.

Can I use Murine Eye Drops daily or long-term?

Murine Eye Drops are not designed for long-term or repeated daily use. Although they are safe and work well when used briefly, like a few days, repeated use can worsen the condition. Your eyes can become tolerant to the drops, and the redness may recur even intensely when you stop using them. This is known as "rebound redness." Dryness or excessive irritation may also be caused by overuse. If you have to use eye drops every day, it is best to see your doctor or pharmacist. Depending on your needs, they can help figure out what's behind your symptoms and prescribe a different formulation of eye drops, such as artificial tears or allergy medicine drops. Take Murine only as directed, and space out when you apply it.

Do I use Murine Eye Drops if I wear contact lenses?

When wearing contact lenses, you must be careful with Murine Eye Drops. These drops contain a preservative called benzalkonium chloride, which can be deposited on contact lenses and irritate your eyes. Therefore, you will have to remove your contact lenses before applying the drops and wait a minimum of 15 minutes before replacing them. This will enable the drops to work and will also shield your lenses. If you get contacts and need eye drops often, talk to your pharmacist about options for wearers of contact lenses. Preservative-free drops or artificial tears might be better for everyday use. Never apply Murine when your lenses are in your eyes, even if they are extremely red — it can cause additional irritation or damage.

What do I do if my eyes sting or are sore?

There can be a slight stinging or burning effect for a second or two when dropping Murine Eye Drops in, especially if your eyes are already irritated. This usually subsides very quickly. But if the stinging is severe, persists for over a minute, or worsens in your eye, you must discontinue the drops and consult a doctor or pharmacist. Certain people will be sensitive to one of the active ingredients, such as benzalkonium chloride. If your eyes turn redder, swell up, or your vision goes blurry (and doesn't clear immediately), you can have an allergic reaction or something more serious. Never keep using a product that burns or stings your eyes - your eyes are delicate and should be treated carefully.

When should I not use Murine Eye Drops at night?

Do not use Murine Eye Drops if you have glaucoma, especially narrow-angle glaucoma, since the drops worsen the condition. Avoid them when you have serious eye problems, including eye infections, or when your eye hurts badly without an apparent cause. If you've had eye surgery or are using other eye medications, consult your physician first. People who are allergic to one of the ingredients, especially benzalkonium chloride, should not use the drops. Do not use them in young children and babies below the age of 12, unless recommended by your doctor. Pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers should seek medical or pharmacist advice before taking any drug, including eye drops. Carefully read the label and follow instructions to stay safe.
