Pharmacist FAQs Answered

How does Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo work?

Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo contains ketoconazole 2%, an antifungal agent that targets the root of dandruff—a yeast called Malassezia. The yeast is found on the skin of all people, but people with dandruff have too much of it. The ketoconazole works by inhibiting the growth of this yeast, reducing inflammation and flaking. Unlike ordinary shampoos that merely eliminate flakes, Nizoral works on the source of the issue to restore the scalp to normal health. The shampoo is also dermatologically tested, fragrance-free, and may be applied to sensitive skin. Symptoms like itchiness, redness, and flaking should improve following a couple of weeks of regular usage.

Is it possible to use Nizoral on coloured or chemically treated hair?

Yes, Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo is generally safe to use on coloured, permed, or chemically treated hair. It is a gentle formulation that doesn’t contain harsh dyes or perfumes, which makes it less likely to interfere with colour or treatment. However, because all hair types react differently, it’s a good idea to do a patch test first or consult your hair care specialist if you’re concerned. Do not apply it on the same day as colouring treatments to prevent unpredictable reactions. Nizoral is intended to treat the scalp and not the hair itself, so it's a good practice to follow up with a conditioner if your hair becomes dry.

Can I apply Nizoral on my face or body for fungal infections?

Yes, Nizoral shampoo can be used off-label on the body for certain fungal skin infections like tinea versicolor, but only under the guidance of your healthcare professional. Tinea versicolor is also caused by Malassezia, the same yeast responsible for dandruff. To use it, you would apply the shampoo to the area, let it remain on the skin for 5 minutes, and then rinse off. This can be done once daily for a maximum of 5 days or as advised by your doctor. Apply it on broken or inflamed skin only if particularly advised, and avoid the eyes and mouth.

What if I forget to use it or miss a dose?

If you forget to use Nizoral Shampoo at the scheduled time, simply use it as soon as you remember. But don't double the next application to make up for the one missed. Missing every now and then, applications will not hurt, but consistent use is essential for the shampoo to work. For treatment, attempt every 3–4 days for 2–4 weeks. For prevention, every 1–2 weeks is normally sufficient. If the dandruff symptoms return or worsen despite using the product as instructed, speak to your doctor or pharmacist for further advice. They may prescribe a different treatment or rule out other scalp conditions.

Can Nizoral Shampoo cause any side effects?

Like all medicines, Nizoral can cause side effects in some individuals, but not everyone experiences them. Most people use it without any problems. Some possible mild side effects include scalp irritation, dryness, or itching during the first few uses. Rarely, allergic reactions like a rash or swelling can occur—if this happens, stop using the product and seek medical help. In very rare cases, hair texture may change, or hair loss may occur. Always follow the directions and avoid overusing the shampoo. If side effects persist or you’re worried, talk to your pharmacist. They can help you decide whether to continue with it or try a different product.

Is Nizoral safe to use during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Yes, Nizoral Shampoo is safe to use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The risk to the baby is very low because it is applied directly to the skin and not absorbed far into the body. However, it's still essential to follow the instructions and not apply them excessively or longer than necessary unless advised by a medical professional. If breastfeeding, try to avoid using the shampoo near the chest area to prevent accidental contact with the baby's skin. If you have any concerns or are taking any other medications, always consult with your doctor or pharmacist before initiating treatment with Nizoral.

How do I store Nizoral Shampoo?

Keep Nizoral Shampoo in a dry location at room temperature, below 25°C. Keep it tightly closed and out of direct sunlight to maintain effectiveness. Always keep medications out of the reach of children. There is no rule of thumb for how long it lasts once opened, but it is best to utilise it within the expiry date on the bottle. If the shampoo changes colour, thickens, or develops an unusual smell, don't use it—even if it's before the expiry date. To get rid of it safely, return unused or expired products to a pharmacy. Don't pour it down the drain unless instructed to do so.
