Product Summary

Optrex ActiMist Double Action for Dry & Tired Eyes has been specifically designed to help combat the effects of modern living, such as computer work, air conditioning and pollution.

It is a clinically proven eye spray for immediate relief from the symptoms of dry and irritated eyes, such as a dry, irritated, gritty, or burning sensation when you blink, but is not usually painful.

Dry eye will usually affect both eyes together but your vision should remain normal.

Symptoms often worsen as the day goes on.

Dry eye is often caused by:

  • use of contact lenses.
  • working in dusty environments.
  • air conditioning. This dries out the air so reduces moisture in the eyes.
  • use of computer screens or watching TV, or reading. This can cause us to stare for longer periods without regular rests, reducing the frequency of blinking. Blinking regularly will help to lubricate the eyes by spreading tears across your eyeball. The lack of blinking can therefore lead to a reduction of the protective lipid layer over the eye.
  • ageing: as we get older, our tear ducts can tend to produce less tears, so there is a greater need to lubricate the eyes.
  • hormonal changes during the menopause
  • some medications, such as allergy tablets containing antihistamines

Dry eyes can occur when we don't produce enough tears or have a reduced oily protective tear film.

Key Features

Optrex ActiMist Double Action for Dry & Tired Eyes works by stabilising the lipid layer: the part of the eye's natural tear film which reduces tear evaporation.

Top Tips

  • Drink plenty of water. This helps keep your whole body, including your eyes, hydrated.
  • If you work at a computer, remember to take regular breaks and blink as often as you can.
  • If possible, try turning the heating or air-conditioning down a little to avoid drying out your eyes.
  • Try to keep your workplace well ventilated. If this is difficult, keep a bowl of water nearby (preferably by the heater if it's on) to increase the humidity in the room.
  • If you wear contact lenses, try to apply Optrex ActiMist regularly, even before the eyes feel irritated.
  • Try applying a hot compress to the eyes to help stimulate the tear ducts to produce more tears.

Pharmacist FAQs Answered

In what way is Optrex ActiMist Double Action helpful for dry and tired eyes?

Optrex ActiMist Double Action works by restoring the lipid layer—the protective oily part of the tear film on the eye's surface. This layer helps reduce moisture loss from the eyes, keeping them hydrated and comfortable. Most activities in the modern world, including prolonged screen time, air conditioning, and wearing contact lenses, have a tendency to disrupt this layer, causing dryness, irritation, or a gritty sensation. By spraying Optrex ActiMist onto closed eyelids, the gentle mist spreads across the eyelid margins and skin, releasing moisture gently and stabilising the tear film. This provides fast relief for dry eyes and can last up to four hours. Being a spray, it is a no-touch, non-invasive application, making it especially useful for people who find drops either uncomfortable or challenging to apply.

How to use Optrex ActiMist in the right way for maximum benefit?

Using Optrex ActiMist is simple, but using it correctly yields the maximum benefit. Prime the nozzle on first use by pressing 3–4 times. Hold the bottle 10 cm from your closed eyelids (about the distance of the width of your palm) and spray 1–2 times on each eye. Repeat 3–4 times a day or as needed. Keep your eyes closed during spraying to allow the mist to spread naturally and reach the eye surface without direct contact. Children over 2 years of age can also use it, although under adult supervision. You can even apply the spray when you have contact lenses on, making it a convenient option for individuals who need frequent moisturising during the day.

Why do dry, tired eyes happen, and how do you prevent them?

Dry, tired eyes can occur for various reasons, such as not blinking enough while working on computers for extended periods, being in dry atmospheres (e.g., heated or air-conditioned rooms), or wearing contact lenses for prolonged hours. Ageing and hormonal changes (e.g., menopause) can reduce tear production. To avoid symptoms, it is advisable to take frequent breaks from screens, blink frequently, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. You can also try introducing moisture into dry rooms by using a humidifier or by placing a bowl of water near a heat source. Regular use of Optrex ActiMist, even when there are no symptoms, can help to keep the natural moisture of your eye in place and provide relief throughout the day.

Are there any precautions or restrictions on the use of Optrex ActiMist?

Yes—although Optrex ActiMist is safe to use, there are a few things to watch out for. Don't use the spray if you have eye pain or if your vision is disturbed—these may be symptoms of a more serious problem that should be looked at by a doctor. The product is not suitable for use in children under 2 years of age. Always read the leaflet before use, especially if you're taking other medicines or have any known allergies, although interactions are not likely. Throw away the bottle 6 months after opening, even if there is still spray left, for safety and hygiene reasons. Store it at room temperature, out of sunlight, and out of children's reach.

How do you store and take care of Optrex ActiMist?

To maintain the quality of the spray and ensure it remains safe to use, store Optrex ActiMist in a cool, dry location between 2°C and 25°C, away from direct sunlight or heat. Store the bottle in its original packaging at all times to prevent damage. After opening, use the product within 6 months—despite any liquid still being present—because after this time, the sterility of the spray cannot be guaranteed. Discard it after this and never use it after the expiry date printed on the bottle or packaging. Keeping to these storage instructions ensures the spray remains effective, safe, and ready to provide you with cooling relief whenever you need it.
