FAQs Answered by our Pharmacists – Pirinase Nasal Spray for Hay Fever and Allergy Relief
How long does it take Pirinase to start working?
Pirinase (fluticasone) doesn’t provide instant relief. It usually starts to reduce inflammation and ease symptoms within 12 hours, but full relief can take up to 2–3 days of regular use. For best results, use it daily during allergy season, even if symptoms seem mild.
Can I use Pirinase with other hay fever medications?
Yes, you can often combine Pirinase with oral antihistamines (like cetirizine or loratadine) or eye drops if needed. However, avoid using multiple steroid treatments (like another steroid nasal spray or steroid tablets) unless your doctor says it’s okay. Always check with a pharmacist if you’re unsure.
Why does the spray need to be used every day?
Pirinase is a preventative treatment. It builds up in your system to control swelling and irritation in your nose caused by allergies. Skipping doses or only using it when symptoms are bad may reduce its effectiveness. Using it daily during peak pollen seasons helps keep symptoms under control.
Can Pirinase cause nosebleeds or dryness?
Yes, nosebleeds or dryness inside the nose are possible side effects, especially if the spray is aimed incorrectly. To reduce this risk:
-
Point the spray slightly away from the center of the nose when using
-
Don’t tilt your head back
-
Use only the recommended dose
If bleeding or irritation continues, stop use and speak to your pharmacist or doctor.
Is Pirinase safe to use long term?
Pirinase can be used for several weeks, especially during allergy seasons. However, it should not be used continuously for more than 1 month without checking with a doctor. Long-term use of corticosteroids may cause side effects like thinning skin or vision problems, so regular reviews are important.
Can Pirinase affect my vision?
Rarely, corticosteroids like fluticasone (in Pirinase) can cause blurred vision or increase the risk of glaucoma or cataracts with long-term use. If you notice eye discomfort, sensitivity to light, or changes in vision, speak to your doctor right away. This is more likely in people using multiple steroid products or with a history of eye conditions.
Should I stop using Pirinase if I catch a cold or sinus infection?
If you have a sinus infection, nose injury, recent surgery, or nose ulcers, you should pause treatment and speak to your doctor before continuing. Using a steroid spray during an active infection could delay healing or worsen irritation in the nose.
