Pharmacist FAQs Answered

Why do I get corns, and how do I prevent them?

Corns are patches of thickened skin that develop due to repeated pressure or friction, often from ill-fitting shoes or walking habits. They're your body's protection for skin, but they occasionally become painful. To avoid corns, wear shoes that fit well and have cushioning, and steer clear of high heels or tight toe boxes. Insoles or protective pads can decrease pressure on high-friction zones. Keeping feet moisturised and filing down hard skin regularly will also assist. After removal using the Scholl kit, keep pressure off the area with corn cushions or foam pads to prevent recurrence.

Is Scholl Corn Treatment Kit appropriate for sensitive skin?

If you have sensitive skin, use caution with the Scholl Corn Treatment Kit, as the medicated discs contain salicylic acid that can irritate normal skin. Always place the discs on the corn and not on normal skin. Always use it carefully according to the instructions, and start with a test for your skin's sensitivity by applying it for a shorter period on the first day. If redness, tenderness, or a rash appears, remove the product and interrupt treatment until your skin is normal again. You can still use the non-medicated corn cushions for pressure relief without irritating your skin. Ask your pharmacist for less irritating options if needed.

Is Scholl Corn Treatment Kit appropriate for people who suffer from bunions?

If you have bunions or foot problems like flat feet or arthritis, be cautious. Pressure spots and deformities in the foot shape can create a greater challenge in treating the foot safely. Salicylic acid needs to come into contact with only the corn and not with the adjacent skin, which is already probably inflamed. You may find it challenging to insert the disc into the correct position without it touching adjoining skin. If you have sensitive skin, see a podiatrist or pharmacist before using this kit. You may find protective padding or custom orthotics more helpful in cushioning corns without using medicated products.

How long does it take to remove a corn with the Scholl kit?

Treatment may take anywhere from a few days to two weeks, depending on the depth and size of the corn. Apply the medicated disc and pad daily, and inspect the skin daily. As treatment continues, the corn should soften and begin to lift off. Avoid pulling it off prematurely, as this will injure the underlying skin. When the corn is coming off easily, stop using discs and use corn cushions to pad the area until it has fully healed. If there is no improvement in the corn after two weeks, seek advice from a pharmacist or podiatrist.

Can I use the Scholl Corn Kit on more than one corn at a time?

Yes, you can treat more than one corn, but make sure each is covered with its own medicated disc and pad. Be sure to apply each disc over the corn centre and avoid touching healthy skin. Be extra careful if corns are close together, as the salicylic acid can spread and irritate the skin between them. If you need to treat more than one area, consider treating one at a time or applying non-medicated cushions to less painful corns. Consult a pharmacist if you are unsure of how to treat more than one area safely.

What if the treatment for the corn stings or makes the skin red?

Some slight tingling may be experienced with salicylic acid, but stinging, redness, or pain can signal irritation or that the disc has touched healthy skin. Remove the medicated disc immediately and wash the area with warm water. Let the skin settle before trying again. Make sure that the disc is placed exactly on the corn and not overlapping onto healthy skin. If irritation persists, discontinue treatment and consult your pharmacist about alternative options. You may be better off having protective pads applied or seeking the advice of a podiatrist for the safe removal of the corn.

Why are diabetics not allowed to use corn removal products like this?

Diabetics often have reduced feeling in their feet (a condition called neuropathy), so they will not notice when skin is being harmed. Using salicylic acid on the feet can cause burns, infection or ulcers without them even knowing it. Diabetic feet also heal more slowly, and small injuries can turn into serious complications. That's why no diabetic, person with nerve damage, or poor circulation should ever use medicated corn treatments without first talking to a doctor or podiatrist. They are instead advised to use cushioning pads only and seek a specialist for corn's safe removal.
