Product Summary

Silicol gel is an oral gel containing colloidal silicic acid for treating upper gastrointestinal disorders. Taken 3 times daily, it can help manage symptoms and relieves gastrointestinal discomfort.

How it works

  • Silicolgel coats the stomach with a protective gel layer
  • The particles bind with irritants, toxins and gases
  • These are then passed through as the body empties naturally
  • Silicic acid can also bind gases and reduce excess acidity.

Silicol gel is suitable for adults and children over 12 who are suffering from gastrointestinal disorders. A certified Medical Device, silicol gel has no known side effects and can be used safely alongside other medication.

How to use

To treat gastrointestinal disorders, take one tablespoon (15ml) of Silicol gel three times daily, preferably before mealtimes.
Silicolgel can be taken either undiluted or diluted in water. After acute symptoms ease, treatment is recommended for another few days. For chronic conditions, treat for up to four weeks and then take a break to re-assess symptoms.

Ingredients

3.5 g Silicon dioxide in 100ml silicic acid gel, Preservatives: Sorbic acid (E200), sodium benzoate (E211).

Warnings and Restrictions

Keep out the reach of children. If symptoms have not reduced after three days, consult a medical doctor.

Pharmacist FAQs Answered

What symptoms can Silicolgel relieve?

Silicolgel can relieve many common digestive problems linked to the upper gastrointestinal tract. These include bloating, indigestion, heartburn, acid reflux, nausea, gas, and stomach ache. It works by forming a protective barrier on the stomach lining and binding to substances that can potentially irritate the gut—like acid, toxins, and gas. This helps reduce symptoms quickly and naturally. People often use Silicolgel when they have digestive flare-ups after eating, during times of stress, or when travelling. If you’re unsure whether your symptoms are caused by something mild or more serious, speak to your pharmacist or GP before use.

Can Silicolgel be used with antacids or reflux medication?

Yes, it is safe to take Silicolgel with most medications, including antacids and acid reflux medications like ranitidine or omeprazole. Because the body does not absorb it, it won't interact with your other medicines. However, to avoid reducing the efficacy of your other medications, take Silicolgel at least one hour earlier or later than any other oral medication. If you’re taking regular medication for your stomach or another health condition, always check with your pharmacist to make sure Silicolgel fits into your routine safely and effectively.

Is Silicolgel suitable for long-term use or only short-term relief?

Silicolgel can be used for both short-term relief of sudden digestive symptoms and longer-term support in people with ongoing issues like reflux or functional dyspepsia. For longer-term use, it is typically taken for up to four weeks, then discontinued to reassess symptoms. For many people, a few days' treatment is enough to calm symptoms, especially after a precipitating factor such as a large meal or stress. If the symptoms return, you may resume the treatment. However, if the issues do not resolve after four weeks or keep recurring, you need to see a doctor to rule out other causes.

Will Silicolgel help with the symptoms of IBS, like gas and bloating?

Yes, Silicolgel can help relieve bloating, trapped gas, and abdominal pain in individuals with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), particularly if symptoms are associated with the upper gastrointestinal tract. It is absorbed by adhering to gas and toxins in the gut, which will calm the stomach and relieve pressure or cramping. While it does not cure IBS, many people take it alongside other approaches like diet and stress management. If your symptoms of IBS are more lower down (for example diarrhoea or constipation), then other treatments are likely to be more appropriate. Ask your pharmacist for advice tailored to your symptoms.

Is Silicolgel safe to take daily, and are there any side effects?

Silicolgel is generally well-tolerated with no adverse effects when used as directed. It is not absorbed into the body and only works within the gastrointestinal tract, making it safe for long-term use in short treatment courses. Because it has the potential to bind to medication or nutrients in the gut, it needs to be taken separately from any other drugs or supplements. Always read the label and only use for as long as necessary. If you experience any unusual symptoms like constipation or increased stomach pain, stop use and consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Can teenagers or older children use Silicolgel for an upset stomach?

Silicolgel may be taken by children above 12 years for mild digestive discomfort, like bloating, indigestion, or excess acid. You need to take the recommended dose—one tablespoon (15ml) three times daily. If a child is having ongoing or severe symptoms, especially if they are vomiting, losing weight, or having abdominal pain, they should be checked by a GP. Silicolgel can be a valuable option for a teen with stress-related gastrointestinal upset or irregular eating habits, but always check with a health professional prior to starting a new treatment in a child.

Will Silicolgel help with food sensitivity or stomach discomfort after eating?

Yes, Silicolgel can help calm after-meal symptoms, particularly if they are caused by food sensitivities or overeating. It does not cure allergies, but it will relieve symptoms such as nausea, acid buildup, bloating, and wind that can sometimes accompany the consumption of rich, spicy, or fatty foods. If you know that certain foods cause stomach upsets, taking Silicolgel before meals can help reduce discomfort. However, suppose you consistently feel unwell after eating or suspect you have a food intolerance. In that case, it's best to keep a food diary and see your local healthcare professional for testing or advice.
