Pharmacist FAQs Answered
What is the spray for, and how does it work?
Stérimar Hayfever & Allergies Nasal Spray is designed to clean and soothe your nose when it becomes irritated by allergens such as pollen, dust, or pet dander. It's made from natural seawater that's teeming with minerals, and it gets to work by rinsing out whatever may be itching, sneezing, or congested. The soft spray coats the inside of your nose, allowing you to breathe more easily. It moistens and keeps your nasal passages healthy, as well, and that could even be enough to keep allergy symptoms from arising in the first place.
May I use this spray daily or only during allergy season?
You can use Stérimar every day, and it's beneficial during allergy season or in areas with high dust or pollution levels. There's no medicine, drug, or preservative in it, so you may use it as frequently as you wish—even multiple times daily. Using it daily may help clear your nose and reduce the likelihood of allergies occurring. It's akin to washing your face or brushing your teeth, except for your nose!
What's so different about blue Stérimar Congestion Relief spray?
The main difference is that Stérimar Hayfever & Allergies is an isotonic solution, which means it has the same level of salt as your body cells. That makes it very mild and safe for daily use and for preventing or relieving allergy symptoms. Or, Stérimar Congestion Relief is a hypertonic spray (drier than your cells), so it's better at drawing fluid out and unclogging extremely congested noses from colds or sinus infections.
So that's it in short:
- Spray with Hayfever & Allergies every day to wash away allergens and soothe your nose.
- Spray Congestion Relief when your nose is stuffed and requires strong decongesting.
Is it safe to use with other allergy medications or nasal sprays?
Yes, it’s perfectly safe to use with other medicines, including antihistamines or medicated nasal sprays. In fact, it can help those medicines work better. By cleaning your nose first, Stérimar clears away mucus and allergens, so your other nasal treatments can reach where they’re needed more effectively. Just wait a few minutes after using Stérimar before using another spray. Always follow the directions on your other medications, and check with a pharmacist if you’re unsure.
Can children use this spray safely?
Yes, children aged 3 and up can use this spray safely. It’s drug-free, gentle, and has a soft mist that’s comfortable for little noses. For younger children, a parent or carer can help guide the nozzle and ensure proper use. Just follow these simple steps:
- Keep the child’s head upright.
- Gently insert the nozzle and spray once or twice.
- Have the child blow their nose afterwards.
It's a simple and safe method of relieving allergy symptoms without medication. But don't use in children younger than 3.
How many times a day can I use it?
There is no strict upper limit, as the product is natural and gentle. Most people use it once or twice daily for regular nasal health, or up to 4–6 times when they are congested or experiencing allergies. You can use it:
- Morning and evening to flush out allergens.
- Before going outdoors when there is pollen.
- Following contact with dusty or dirty conditions.
If your symptoms worsen or do not improve after a week or so, it's always better to consult a doctor.
What if I get nosebleeds or have a dry, sensitive nose?
If you have frequent nosebleeds, you should not apply this spray until you have a consultation with your physician. It is typically mild, but spraying into a bleeding or inflamed nose can be uncomfortable. If your nose is extremely dry, the spray may potentially still help by introducing humidity, but use one spray in each nostril and see how it feels. Stop if you experience burning or stinging, and consult a healthcare professional.
What do I do if I have some of the spray in my throat?
This is not harmful. There is natural seawater in Stérimar, and so if some of it runs down your throat, you might taste a little bit of salt, but no harm at all. To avoid this, keep your head straight when spraying and avoid inhaling the fumes when using it. After spraying, allow the solution to run out naturally and then gently blow your nose.
Can I use this when pregnant or breastfeeding?
Yes, since Stérimar is completely drug-free and made up of natural ingredients, it is typically safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It doesn't contain any medication that could hurt your baby. Many pregnant women use it instead of medicated sprays when they experience stuffiness or irritation from hay fever. If you're worried, always ask your doctor or midwife.
