  • Gargle by diluting with water as directed on the pack.
  • Do not use if you have an allergic skin condition or are sensitive to the active ingredients.
  • If you swallow large amounts, drink plenty of water.
  • If you are still unwell, see your doctor.
  • In normal use, you should not suffer unwanted side effects.
  • However, if you notice anything unusual, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Seek medical advice if symptoms persist for more than a few days.
  • Simply gargle twice a day with TCP diluted with 5 parts water.
  • DO NOT SWALLOW

Pharmacist FAQs Answered

Can I use TCP for a sore throat?

Yes, you can use TCP for a sore throat, especially if it is accompanied by a cold or flu. To apply it, dissolve TCP in 5 parts of water and gargle twice a day. Do not swallow it, as TCP is not intended for internal use. Gargling kills bacteria in the mouth and in the throat, which eliminates pain and swelling. If your sore throat lasts more than a few days, worsens, or you also have a fever, consult your doctor or pharmacist. TCP is not a remedy for infections that need antibiotics.

Is it safe to put TCP directly onto skin cuts or grazes?

Yes, TCP can be used immediately on cuts, grazes, insect stings, or bites, but thinning it with an equal amount of water beforehand is recommended. This reduces the risk of irritation or stinging. However, in the event of an emergency, the undiluted version can be used. Clean the wound first, and then apply TCP gently, allowing it to air dry. Do not use TCP on deep or big wounds, or cover them with a dressing unless told to do so. If the wound becomes infected (discharge, swelling, redness), or does not heal after a few days, see a medical doctor.

Can I use TCP for pimples and spots?

Yes, TCP is effective for treating pimples, spots, and small boils. You may apply undiluted every four hours using a clean cotton bud or a tissue. It will kill germs on the skin and dry out spots. Avoid covering the area afterwards, as it will retain heat and moisture, potentially worsening the spot. Avoid using TCP on broken skin or large areas of your face, as this can cause tenderness. If you have sore or stinging spots or acne, consult a pharmacist or GP about more suitable treatment options.

What should I do if I swallow TCP by accident?

If you swallow a small amount of diluted TCP accidentally while gargling, it is unlikely to be harmful. Drink a glass of water and avoid using it again until you are sure how to gargle without swallowing. If you or someone else has swallowed a great deal, drink lots of water at once and seek medical advice. Always read label instructions carefully, and do not swallow TCP accidentally—it is not meant to be swallowed. Store it out of reach of children to avoid accidental swallowing.

Can children use TCP?

Children may use TCP for small cuts, grazes, and bites by insects, but an adult must apply it. Diluted solution should only be used in emergencies. For mouth ulcers and sore throats, it is advisable to see a pharmacist or doctor first, particularly in young children. TCP smells and tastes extremely strongly, and some children dislike it. Never have a child gargle on their own, and always caution them not to swallow. If you are unsure if TCP is suitable for your child, talk to your pharmacist.
