Pharmacist FAQs Answered
What is Tixylix Glycerol Toddler Syrup for?
Tixylix Glycerol Toddler Syrup is for the treatment of dry, tickly coughs and sore throats in children aged 3 months to 5 years. It smooths the throat by coating it to relieve irritation and make your child more comfortable. It doesn't clear infections, but it can alleviate symptoms while your child recovers from their infection. Always consult a pharmacist if you are unsure whether the cough may require further investigation.
How much should I give my child?
The dose differs according to your child's age:
- 3 months to under 1 year: Give one 5ml spoonful
- 1 to 5 years: Give two 5ml spoonfuls
You can administer it 3 to 4 times daily, at least 3 to 4 hours apart. A measuring spoon is provided to aid you in administering the right dose. Don't administer more than 4 doses in 24 hours.
Is it safe for infants less than 3 months old?
No, Tixylix Glycerol Syrup should not be given to babies under 3 months. If your baby then has a cough or sore throat, it is recommended to seek advice from your GP or health visitor, especially if the cough persists and there are other symptoms.
Is Tixylix sugar-free?
Yes, Tixylix Glycerol Toddler Syrup is colour-free and sugar-free, so it's an ideal option in young children, especially for protecting their teeth. It's available in a blackcurrant flavour, which is smooth and pleasant to most children.
When do I see a doctor or pharmacist?
See a GP or pharmacist if:
- The cough lasts for more than 3 days
- The cough gets worse, or they develop a high temperature
- They are wheezing, breathing with difficulty, or refusing to feed
- They are under 1 year old and in general ill health
This syrup is only for dry, mild coughs, so if you ever in doubt, best get professional advice.
