How does Beconase work, and when should you use it?
Beconase Hayfever Relief contains a corticosteroid beclometasone dipropionate that reduces swelling in the nose. It works immediately where hay fever symptoms begin, relieving a stuffed or runny nose, sneezing, and itchy or watery eyes.
It is recommended that you start using Beconase a few days before the pollen season begins, especially if you suffer from annual seasonal hay fever. This gives the drug time to build up and reduce your body's allergic reaction. Use it daily as instructed - even if your symptoms are low or seem to have passed.
Who Can Use Beconase Nasal Spray?
This spray is only for use by people aged 18 and above. Avoid use in children or adolescents except under the advice of a doctor.
Getting the Most from Beconase
Shake the bottle gently before each use. The usual dosage is two sprays into each nostril in the morning and evening. As your symptoms get better, you should try reducing to one spray in each nostril twice a day.
Do not use more than four sprays per nostril a day
Do not use continuously for more than one month without a doctor's advice
Always spray ever so slightly off to one side of the centre of your nose to avoid nosebleeds
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember - but don't take a double dose to make up for a forgotten one.
FAQs Answered by Pharmacists
Can Beconase be used with oral antihistamines?
Yes, in some cases. Beconase can be combined with antihistamine tablets when you have eye and skin symptoms not fully helped by the nasal spray. Ask your pharmacist beforehand.
What if my symptoms haven't improved?
If your hay fever symptoms have not improved after 7 consecutive days, speak to a doctor. You may require a change in treatment, or your symptoms could be caused by something else.
Is Beconase used for non-hay fever allergies (like dust mites or pet dander)?
Yes, it will also prevent symptoms from other airborne allergens, not just pollen. If you don't know what you're allergic to, speak with your pharmacist about having allergy tests.
Can I have alcohol while taking Beconase?
There are no known alcohol interactions with this nasal spray if used appropriately.
Does it make me sleepy like some allergy tablets?
No. Beconase is not a sedating drug because it has a local effect on the nose and does not reach the brain like some older antihistamines.
