Pharmacist FAQs Answered

What do I use Care Aqueous Calamine Cream for?

The cream is used to calm and soothe inflamed skin. It functions by incorporating calamine and zinc oxide, which are gentle astringents - that is, they make the skin slightly tighten, relieving itching, redness, or discharge. It is used to offer relief from itchy skin rashes, slight sunburn, and minor skin irritations, including heat rash, insect bites, and contact with plants like stinging nettles. In children, it is more commonly used to relieve itching due to nappy rash or viral infections like chickenpox. If treating nappy rash, we have an article explaining the different nappy rash creams recommended by our pharmacists. It is better in combination with an antihistamine if they are old enough and able to take it. If you are not sure, you can always contact your local doctor or pharmacist.

How does Calamine Cream work?

The active ingredients, zinc oxide and calamine cool the skin and form a protective barrier, calming itchiness and soothing inflammation. The cream also has moisturising ingredients like glyceryl monostearate and liquid paraffin, which soften and moisturise dry skin.

How do I use Calamine Cream?

Make sure the skin is clean and dry before use. Apply a generous amount of the cream and spread it smoothly over the affected area. Reapply as often as needed. The cream may be used by adults and children, including the elderly. Keep it away from the eyes, and do not apply it to broken skin.

Can I use Calamine Cream on sunburn?

Yes, this cream is suitable for mild sunburn, particularly if the skin is itchy or hot. Its slight cooling effect will help relieve the skin while it heals.

Can Calamine Cream be used with other medicines or skin products?

In most cases, yes - no drug interactions are recognised with this cream when used on the skin. If you use other topical preparations (e.g., steroid creams or prescription ointments), talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using them together.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are rare. Mild irritation, such as redness or stinging, may occur in some people with very sensitive skin. If you notice a rash, burning, or any other reaction, stop using the cream and talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

When should I not use this cream?

Do not use if you are allergic to calamine, zinc oxide, or other ingredients. Do not apply on open wounds, weeping skin, or infected skin areas unless your healthcare professional advises.

How should I store Calamine Cream?

Keep the cream below 25°C, and do not freeze. Keep the lid tightly closed after use and keep the product out of children's reach.
