Product Summary

Corsodyl Dental Gel contains 1% Chlorhexidine Digluconate. This active ingredient kills the bacteria that cause plaque rapidly (within 30 seconds).

It also forms a protective antibacterial layer over the teeth and gums to prevent plaque build-up for up to 12 hours.

Key Features

  • Helps you target problem areas in your mouth directly and effectively.
  • It can be used as an intensive treatment formulated to treat and prevent gum problems, such as red, swollen and bleeding gums.
  • Clinically proven to help put a stop to the first stage of gum disease (gingivitis).
  • If left untreated, this can progress to the irreversible second stage of gum disease, periodontitis, which can lead to tooth loss.

Directions

  • Gum disease: Brush your teeth for at least one minute once or twice daily using 2 cm of gel. Continue the treatment for about 1 month.
  • Mouth ulcers & oral thrush: Apply gel directly to the sore areas using your finger once or twice daily for at least 1 minute. Continue use for 2 days after healing.
  • Denture-sore mouth: Thoroughly brush all over dentures with 2.5 cm of gel on a moistened toothbrush once or twice daily for about 1 month.
  • Dental surgery or tooth decay: Use as directed by your dentist.

If symptoms persist, see your dentist.

Pharmacist FAQs Answered

Is Corsodyl Dental Gel suitable for routine daily oral care?

Corsodyl Dental Gel is not to be used every day or continually as part of your oral routine. It's best as a short-term, specific therapy during flare-ups of gum disease, oral infection, or post-operative healing. Long-term application increases the possibility of side effects like staining or change in taste, and might mask underlying issues that need professional attention. Repeated gum issues must be solved by getting a dental check-up to identify the cause and not repeatedly relying on repeated episodes of antibacterial gel.

Can it be used with whitening toothpaste or electric toothbrushes?

Yes, but with caution. If you have a whitening toothpaste on your teeth, especially one that has harsh abrasives or sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), this can reduce the antibacterial activity of the gel. To avoid interference, brush at another time of day or at least 30 minutes after brushing. It is safe to use electric toothbrushes with Corsodyl Gel, but gently brush sensitive or inflamed gums to avoid irritation.

Is Corsodyl Gel safe for soft tissues such as cheeks or tongue?

It may be applied on non-tooth surfaces such as the interior of cheeks, gums, or even the tongue in case of mouth ulcers or oral thrush. These are more sensitive, though, and overuse might lead to short-term side effects such as mucosal peeling, dryness, or stinging. If this occurs, attempt to cut back on the frequency of dilution and consult a dentist or pharmacist if discomfort continues.

What signs should I stop using the gel and see a dentist?

You should discontinue use and consult a dentist if you have any of the following: increased gum sensitivity, persistent swelling, rash, or allergic reaction, or if your symptoms do not improve within 7 to 10 days of daily use. The gel is designed to offer fast, local relief. If the issue persists, this could be evidence of a more severe infection or other complicating factor necessitating further treatment.

Is it possible to use Corsodyl Gel during pregnancy or lactation?

Corsodyl Dental Gel is safe to use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Its active ingredient, chlorhexidine, is not absorbed into the bloodstream in significant amounts when used topically in the mouth. That said, it's always a good idea to let your healthcare provider or midwife know if you’re using medicated oral treatments during pregnancy, particularly if you’re simultaneously managing other conditions or medications.

Will it stain dental restorations like crowns or fillings?

Yes, Corsodyl Gel can induce surface staining of natural teeth and composite restorations such as fillings, crowns, bridges, and veneers. The staining is usually superficial and can probably be removed by a hygienist, although possibly more conspicuous on cosmetic restorations. To minimise staining, remove drinks like coffee, tea, red wine, and cigarettes during treatment. Discuss preventative care or alternatives with your dentist before starting a full course if you are worried about discolouration in dental treatment.
