Pharmacist FAQs Answered
What is Dioralyte used for?
Dioralyte is a successful rehydration treatment for rehydrating quickly lost fluids and salts in patients with diarrhoea. Diarrhoea makes you lose water and valuable minerals (electrolytes) like sodium and potassium from your body. Dioralyte acts fast to replace the natural balance in the body to prevent dehydration, which can be serious, especially in babies, young children, and the elderly. It can be used from birth (under medical supervision in babies) to old age.
How do I use Dioralyte correctly?
To get the best effect, follow these steps:
- Dissolve 1 sachet of Dioralyte in 200 ml of water (that's about a standard glass).
- Use fresh drinking water for adults and older children. For babies or where safe water is not available, boil the water and let it cool before mixing.
- Prepare the solution only just before you need it.
- If it is refrigerated, the prepared solution lasts 24 hours. Otherwise, bin any unused solution after 1 hour.
Don't use any more or any less water than directed – it could lead to the incorrect mixture of salts, which can be hazardous.
How much Dioralyte should be taken?
Dosage depends upon age:
Adults and old people: Take 1 or 2 sachets after each loose stool.
Children: Give 1 sachet with each loose stool.
Infants under 2 years: The doctor may advise taking 1 to 1.5 times their normal feed amount within 24 hours with Dioralyte. Always seek medical advice for babies of this age.
If diarrhoea continues beyond 24 to 48 hours, or if the person looks very unwell, seek medical advice immediately.
If there is vomiting as well as diarrhoea, try giving the solution in small sips, often, to try and keep it down.
Is Dioralyte appropriate for babies and young children?
Yes, Dioralyte is safe to use in children and can be given from birth, but under-2-year-olds must be seen at the earliest opportunity by a doctor if they have diarrhoea. Babies dehydrate more quickly than adults, so early rehydration is essential.
Always take exact advice or instruction from your GP or pharmacist when giving Dioralyte to babies.
Can I take Dioralyte if I have other conditions?
You should ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking Dioralyte if you have:
- Diabetes
- Kidney or liver failure
- Intestinal obstruction (a blockage in the gut)
- Been advised you are on a low-sodium or low-potassium diet
Although usually safe, Dioralyte will interact with some conditions as they can affect your body's control of water and salts and extra care will be needed.
Is there anything which causes a side effect when taking Dioralyte?
Dioralyte is usually very safe and well tolerated. Side effects are unlikely, but some people may experience:
- Mild stomach discomfort
- Wind or bloating
- Allergic reactions (rare) – such as a rash, itching, or swelling
If you notice any unusual symptoms after taking Dioralyte, stop taking it and speak to your doctor or pharmacist.
How do I store Dioralyte?
To keep Dioralyte effective:
Store sachets below 25°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture.
Keep the sachets in the original packaging until you’re ready to use them.
Once a sachet has been opened and mixed with water, use within 1 hour, or within 24 hours if kept in the fridge.
Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
