Pharmacist FAQs Answered
What is the process by which DulcoEase relieves constipation?
DulcoEase contains docusate sodium, a stool softener that works by drawing more water into the bowel, making hard, dry stools softer and easier to pass. It does not force the bowel to contract like stimulant laxatives do. Instead, it encourages more comfortable and regular bowel movements. This makes it perfect for those who want a gentle, non-irritating solution to relieve occasional or chronic constipation.
How long will I be relieved after taking DulcoEase?
DulcoEase will begin to take effect 12 to 72 hours after your first dose. It is not an immediate relief tablet, but it works slowly and thus gives a natural bowel movement. If you don't receive a response within a few days or your symptoms worsen, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
How many DulcoEase capsules should I take daily?
Adults should start with three capsules per day, taken throughout the day, and adjust the dosage based on how your body responds. You can take up to six capsules a day, if needed. When you are feeling better, you should taper your dose. Always swallow the capsules whole with water; never crush or chew them. DulcoEase is not recommended for children under 12 years of age unless a physician instructs you otherwise.
Can DulcoEase be used regularly or long-term?
DulcoEase is only for short-term use. If you need it for more than 7 consecutive days, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Chronic constipation can be an indication of a more serious issue, such as IBS or dietary imbalance. Long-term misuse of laxatives without consulting your doctor is not recommended because it can alter how your bowel naturally functions in the long term.
Is DulcoEase safe for everyone to use?
DulcoEase is not suitable for everybody. Don't take it if you have:
- Stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting that isn't caused by an obvious reason
- A new onset of the type of your bowels that persists in 2 weeks
- Past history of taking mineral oil (speak to a pharmacist first)
If pregnant or breastfeeding, consult with a healthcare practitioner first before taking DulcoEase. You may not be able to take it then.
What if I experience side effects?
Although DulcoEase is generally well tolerated, stop taking it and see your doctor if you experience:
- Rectal bleeding
- No bowel movement after you have taken a capsule
- Any symptom of an allergic reaction, such as rash, itching, or swelling
They could be symptoms of a more serious problem. Also, do not use DulcoEase if the safety seal under the cap is absent or broken.
Can I take DulcoEase before a medical procedure?
Yes, DulcoEase is occasionally taken before such procedures as an abdominal X-ray. Your doctor will sometimes prescribe a particular amount - usually four capsules - to prep the bowel. Just be sure to follow your hospital's directions to the letter.
