Pharmacist FAQs Answered

What is Germoloids Ointment used for?

Germoloids Ointment is an over-the-counter (OTC) medicine to relieve symptoms of haemorrhoids (piles) such as swelling, itching, stinging, and pain. It contains two active ingredients: lidocaine hydrochloride, a local anaesthetic that numbs the area to relieve pain and discomfort, and zinc oxide, which is present to calm and protect the inflamed skin. This two-way movement makes it especially useful for people who experience both internal and external haemorrhoids. Germoloids Ointment works to alleviate pain and is also anti-inflammatory, making bowel movements easier to manage and supporting long-term healing. It can be used in pregnancy and lactation, but only on medical advice.

How do I use Germoloids Ointment correctly?

For maximum effects, apply Germoloids Ointment to the infected area twice daily, at least 3 to 4 hours between applications. It may be applied up to four times in 24 hours, ideally after a bowel movement, to neutralise irritation and cover the skin. Wash and dry the area to be treated before use, and apply a small amount gently with clean fingers or the supplied applicator if treating internal piles. Always read the product instructions and packaging carefully before use. Excessive use can lead to irritation or side effects.

Is Germoloids Ointment safe to use during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Yes, Germoloids Ointment is suitable for use when pregnant or breastfeeding, but first, always ask your doctor or midwife. Haemorrhoids are a natural occurrence during pregnancy due to increased pressure in the rectum and hormonal effects on blood vessels. Germoloids offers relief gently with a calming barrier and a local anaesthetic to reduce symptoms. But your family physician will be able to weigh up the advantages against risks if your symptoms are severe or recurrent. Never start any new drug in pregnancy without consulting a doctor.

What are the side effects of Germoloids Omitment?

Most family members tolerate Germoloids Omitment quite well, but side effects can happen with any medicine. Sometimes, users may experience additional irritation, burning, or a rash at the site of ointment application. These are usually mild and will clear up once the product is stopped. If you notice your symptoms get worse, you're bleeding heavily, or you have pain which doesn't go away, stop using it and speak to your pharmacist or GP. In very rare cases, the allergic reaction is caused by ingredients such as lanolin or methyl salicylate. If you suffer from allergies, carefully read the entire ingredient list before first use.

Can Germoloids Ointment be used for ongoing haemorrhoid symptoms?

While Germoloids Ointment offers symptomatic relief of mild to moderate haemorrhoid symptoms, it is often intended for limited use during flares. If you require treatment on a regular basis, or if the symptoms do not subside after applying the ointment, it's advisable to visit a doctor. Recurrent or chronic haemorrhoids tend to require further examination or other treatments, such as dietary adjustments, lifestyle changes, or, in some cases, medical intervention. Do not use the ointment long-term without consulting a physician, especially in the event of continued pain or bleeding, since it can be an indication of some underlying condition which must be dealt with promptly.
