Pharmacist FAQs Answered
How quickly does St John's Wort work?
St John's Wort is an old herbal remedy, and like most natural remedies, it doesn't work quickly. Typically, most people begin to notice improvement in mood or anxiety symptoms within 2 to 4 weeks of daily consistent use. Take it every day at the same time for optimal effect. But if you're not feeling any better after 6 weeks, or if your symptoms worsen, do not continue taking the tablets and talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This medication is only for mild symptoms and must not be taken for severe depression or anxiety. It's also best not to take more than the prescribed amount because taking more won't make results come any sooner but may maybe have side effects.
Is it possible to take St John's Wort in combination with other drugs?
St John's Wort doesn't mix well with some prescription and nonprescription medication, and one of these potential drug interactions may be harmful. For example, it can reduce the effectiveness of the contraceptive pill, antidepressants, HIV medication, blood thinners, and epilepsy or heart disease medications. It affects how your liver breaks down medicine, leading to too much or too little of a drug in your body. This is why you should always see a doctor or pharmacist before taking St John's Wort if you are already on any other medication. Although the product is natural, it can still have a strong effect within your body and isn't always safe to take with other treatments.
What is the difference between low mood and depression?
Low mood can happen to anyone and can be due to stress, tiredness, or upsetting life events. It typically improves with rest, lifestyle changes, or low-level support. St John's Wort is suitable for the treatment of mildly low mood or mild anxiety symptoms such as irritability, sleep disturbance, or feeling "off" for a few weeks or days. Depression, however, is a longer-standing medical illness that may also include intense sadness, hopelessness, inactivity regarding daily activities, or suicidal thoughts. If you believe you are depressed or your mood is getting in the way of your daily life, you should go and consult with a doctor. St John's Wort is inappropriate for more severe depression and can delay adequate treatment if used alone.
Is St John's Wort safe to use with hormonal contraceptives?
No, St John's Wort disrupts the action of hormonal contraceptives, including the combined pill, mini pill, patch, ring, and implant. It speeds up the manner in which your body breaks down the hormones in birth control, making them less effective and reducing the risk of unplanned pregnancy. If you are on hormonal contraception, then you should not take St John's Wort at all unless advised to do so by your pharmacist or doctor, and you have additional protection on, such as condoms. This side effect may happen even if St John's Wort is taken for a limited time only, so it is recommended to not have the two together at all. Always tell your medical provider about any herbal supplements that you are considering if you are on birth control.
Are there any side effects I need to know about?
Most people can tolerate St John's Wort, but like all medications, there are side effects. Some people have stomach discomfort, headache, dizziness, or restlessness. A frequent reaction is increased sensitivity to the sun, especially in individuals with light skin—this can lead to sunburning more quickly than normal. If you get a rash, itch, or become sick, stop using and speak with your pharmacist. In a few cases, it can cause allergic reactions or worsen certain mental illnesses if used improperly. You should not consume alcohol and other sedatives while using it either. Always read the leaflet carefully, and if you experience anything unusual or bothersome, consult a healthcare professional immediately.
Is St John's Wort safe for everyone to use?
No, St John's Wort is not safe for everyone. You must not take it if you are under 18 years of age, pregnant, breastfeeding, or allergic to any of the ingredients. It's also unsafe if you have surgery scheduled within the near term, or are suffering from various medical conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, or seizure disorders, without first consulting your doctor. Bear in mind that "natural" does not necessarily mean safe. If you do have any underlying chronic health concerns or are under medication, then you must speak with your physician or pharmacist first before taking it. St John's Wort is intended for use over a short period only and must not be taken continuously without expert advice.
