Pharmacist FAQs Answered

How quickly does Gaviscon Advance take to work?

Gaviscon Advance works extremely quickly, usually within a few minutes of taking it. It doesn't neutralise stomach acid like some antacids, but instead forms a protective layer or 'raft' that floats on top of the stomach's contents. This keeps acid from moving up into the oesophagus (food pipe), where it causes the burning feeling of heartburn or the acidic taste of acid reflux. Because of this raft-forming action, it can offer rapid and long-lasting relief, particularly after meals or at night when symptoms typically worsen. You will feel okay within 5–10 minutes, but you must take the correct dose and avoid going to bed within minutes of eating to get the full benefit.

Can I take Gaviscon Advance every day?

Gaviscon Advance can be taken daily, especially by people who have ongoing heartburn or reflux. It is not addictive and contains no ingredients that cause dependence. Nevertheless, however, it's safest to take only when necessary, with food or at bedtime rather than on an every-day routine. If one has to use it every day for more than seven straight days, perhaps it is symptomatic of another condition like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD), and one should see a doctor. Also, since it contains sodium and calcium, consult a healthcare provider if you have a low-sodium diet or kidney disease.

Is Gaviscon Advance safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Yes, Gaviscon Advance is one of the safest drugs available for treating heartburn during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It does not contain harmful medications, such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or H2 blockers. Instead, it works physically by forming a protective shield within the stomach. That is to say that it doesn't travel into your blood system in big amounts and will not hurt your baby. The majority of doctors and midwives recommend Gaviscon as an initial treatment for acid reflux associated with pregnancy, which is common due to hormonal changes and the baby pushing against your stomach. But it's a good idea to let your midwife or doctor know that you're taking it regularly, just for peace of mind.

Can I take Gaviscon with other drugs like omeprazole or ranitidine?

Yes, Gaviscon Advance is generally okay to take with drugs like omeprazole, esomeprazole, or ranitidine, which work by reducing the amount of acid your stomach produces. Doctors even suggest taking them together for additional relief—omeprazole is effective in the long term, and Gaviscon addresses immediate symptoms. But to prevent interfering with the way your medicines work, take Gaviscon at least 1 hour after any other oral medication unless instructed otherwise by your doctor or pharmacist. This is because the protective barrier it creates sometimes decreases the absorption of different medicines. Always check with your pharmacist if you are on regular treatment.

What foods should I avoid or not eat if I get heartburn?

If you experience heartburn frequently, certain foods and lifestyle habits can exacerbate it. Don't eat spicy food, citrus fruits, tomatoes, caffeine, chocolate, and carbonated drinks—all of these can relax the muscle on top of your stomach and allow acid through. Avoid heavy or large meals, particularly in the evening, and eat more slowly. Smoking and alcohol can also exacerbate symptoms. After eating, stay upright for at least one hour and avoid bending over or lying down flat. If heartburn bothers you at night, try elevating the head of your bed slightly. These adjustments, combined with taking Gaviscon Advance, can make you feel more comfortable during the day and night.
